Muslims across the world are set to witness a rare calendrical phenomenon in 2039, when the annual Hajj pilgrimage will be observed twice within a single Gregorian year, a development rooted in the fundamental differences between the Islamic and Western calendar systems.
The unusual occurrence is a direct consequence of the Islamic calendar’s lunar structure, which consists of 354 or 355 days, making it approximately 10 to 11 days shorter than the solar-based Gregorian calendar. This annual gap causes Islamic months to shift progressively earlier each year, creating periodic overlaps in which major religious rites fall twice within the same Gregorian year.
In 2039, this gradual shift will result in two separate Hajj seasons, an event regarded as uncommon but not unprecedented. A similar occurrence was last recorded in 2006, underscoring the predictable yet infrequent nature of the lunar cycle’s alignment with the solar calendar.
Religious scholars and calendar experts note that while the phenomenon carries no doctrinal implications, it presents significant planning considerations for Hajj authorities, travel operators, and host institutions in Saudi Arabia. Managing two pilgrimage seasons within one calendar year could place added pressure on logistics, infrastructure, and international coordination, particularly given the rising number of global pilgrims.
